In general, a mountain is a landform that has some kind of significant prominence or distinction compared to the surrounding land, usually in the shape of a peak. Mountains are considered to be steeper, taller, and more prominent than hills. Mountains can rise individually, but usually form in a series of mountains called a mountain range.
Most commonly, prominence is used to define mountains. Some authorities consider anything above 300 meters (1000 ft) to be a mountain, while others make the borderline 600 meters (2000 ft).
A mountain is a large landform that rises above the surrounding land in a limited area, usually in the form of a peak. A mountain is generally steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed through tectonic forces or volcanism. These forces can locally raise the surface of the earth. Mountains erode slowly through the action of rivers, weather conditions, and glaciers.
The forming of a mountain is called orogeny. Mountains are formed when rock layers in the ground are pushed from opposite sides, and by being pushed, they push the crust up. A mountain range is a large group of mountains beside each other.
There are three main types of mountains: volcanic, fold, and block. All three types are formed from plate tectonics
Volcanoes are formed when a plate is pushed below another plate, or at a mid-ocean ridge or hotspot.
Fold mountains occur when two plates collide: shortening occurs along thrust faults and the crust is overthickened
Block mountains are caused by faults in the crust: a plane where rocks have moved past each other.
Climate in the mountains becomes colder at high elevations, due an interaction between radiation and convection. Sunlight in the visible spectrum hits the ground and heats it.
Mountaineering, mountain climbing, or alpinism is the sport, hobby or profession of hiking, skiing, and climbing mountains. While mountaineering began as attempts to reach the highest point of unclimbed big mountains it has branched into specializations that address different aspects of the mountain and consists of three areas: rock-craft, snow-craft and skiing
